Purpose: To examine the efficacy of photodynamic therapy (PDT) with verteporfin (VPDT) in the treatment of subfoveal choroidal neovascularisation (CNV) in patients with pathologic myopia (>-8.00 dioptres). Methods: Prospective study of adult patients (≥ 18 years) with subfoveal CNV; treated in two tertiary referral centres with standard protocol of VPDT. Best-corrected visual acuity (VA) was measured at baseline and at 1, 3, 6, 12, 15, 18, and 24 months after VPDT. Stratified analyses for those with single and multiple treatments, and different age groups were performed by paired t-tests against baseline. Results: Thirty-three patients with one VPDT treatment and 13 patients with multiple treatments were enrolled for the analysis. Mean VA continued to improve over the study period; statistically significant improvement in measurement of VA was found after one month of follow-up for group with single therapy. For group with multiple treatments, trends was not as clear. In risk factor analysis by age, younger group had better mean VA compared with older group at end of the 24-month study period. Trend of improvement is also much more evident in the younger group. Conclusion: In Taiwanese patients showing response to single VPDT, VA significantly improved and continued to improve over 2-year study period. In patients who received multiple treatments, trend was not as distinctive, suggesting alternative treatment options in this subgroup of patients.
