PURPOSE﹕To compare outcomes of self-made disposable and routine instruments for biaxial phacoemulsification and evaluate the feasibility of self-made disposable biaxial instruments for biaxial microincision phacoemulsification surgery(MISC). METHODS﹕Forty cataract eyes of 40 patients without any other ocular and systemic diseases were randomly operated by biaxial microincision phacoemulsification using either self-made disposable biaxial instruments which were fashioned from 20gauge to 23gauge disposable needles (for 20 eyes)or routine biaxial instruments which were produce by some companies (for 20 eyes). Research parameters included total surgery time, effective phacoemulsification time, total phacoemulsification percent, intraoperative total balanced salt solution(BSS) volume, preoperative and postoperative endothelial cell count, visual acuity, intraoperative and postoperative complications. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 10.1 for Wondows (SPSS,Chicago,IL). Student’s t test was used for analysis. RESULTS﹕There were no significant difference between these two groups regarding the mean percent of endothelial loss, total surgery time, effective phacoemulsification time, total phacoemulsification percent, intraoperative total balanced salt solution(BSS) volume, preoperative and postoperative corrected and uncorrected visual acuity. No severe complication happened intraoperatively and postoperatively. CONCLUSION﹕ These self-made biaxial instruments worked as effectively as the routine biaxial instruments did. This method is very easy and practical for the promising biaxial MICS especially in less developed and developing countries which can not afford to expensive instruments.
