Festival and Sightseeing

Festival
Bali has many kinds of events and ceremony, so there are numerous chances for tourists to witness various occasions of celebration. Apart from the western calendar, the Balinese also use two Hindu calendars - Wuku and Saka.

The Galungan Festival is a major feast in Bali in January. It is an annual event in the Wuku year to commemorate the victory of Dharma (virtue) upon Adharma (evil). During this 10-day period all the gods come down to earth for the festivities and barongs (mythical lion-dog creatures) prance from temple to temple and village to village. Celebration is held throughout the island.

The Kuningan Festival is an important festival of the Saka year - it's the last day of the year, and usually falls towards the end of March. The day is set aside as a day of purification. In the night, evil spirits are driven away with cymbals, gongs, drums and flaming torches. It is followed by Nyepi, the Hindu New Year, where everyone stays quietly at home, making no noise, using no lights and doing no cooking. The idea is that when evil spirits descend, they are fooled into thinking that Bali is uninhabited and leave the island in peace for another year.

Sightseeing
Bali's natural attractions include miles of sandy beaches well-known to surfers, picturesque rice terraces, towering active volcanoes over 3,000 meters high, fast flowing rivers, deep ravines, pristine crater lakes, sacred caves, and lush tropical forests full of exotic wildlife.

The island's rich cultural heritage is visible everywhere - in over 20,000 temples and palaces, in many colorful festivals and ceremonies (including tooth filings and cremations), in drama, music, and dance.

You can experience Bali on many different excursions and guided tours by coach, private car or "Big Bike", by boat or even by helicopter. One can imagine seeing Bali's beaches, rice terraces, the famous Besakih Temple on the slopes of holy Mount Agung, Lake Batur and it's active volcano, Ubud, Legian, Kuta, Nusa Dua, and the temples of Tanah Lot and Ulu Watu from a bird's-eye view will be a truly amazing experience.
